Cinema Releases - Christmas 2008

The Christmas season is fast approaching, and so is the anticipation and expectation for the movies that will be released in cinemas these holidays. Watching movies, whether in cinemas or on DVD, has become a tradition of the holidays and is an aspect that increases the charm of the holiday season. Some movies are released a little before Christmas while there are others that are released during the Christmas holidays.

This year there are many films that have been scheduled for release during the Christmas holidays. There are many films that are to be released in the month of December. Let's take a look at some of the cinema releases on Christmas Day.

Marley & Me starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson is the story of a family who have a dog. The release date is December 25th, and this is one of those cute family movies that you don't want to miss at Christmas. The other movie set for release on the 25th is Bedtime Stories. The film stars Adam Sandler, whose life changes because of bedtime stories coming true. These are the stories he tells his niece and nephew at bedtime. This movie contains some of the magic that people want to have in Christmas movies.

Four Christmases is a movie that has a Christmas-related theme, along with a good cast. It is being released in November and looks promising. The film stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, a couple trying their best to meet their four divorced parents on Christmas. The release date for the release is November 26th.

If you are in the mood for a more serious kind of movie, there are some good choices available. For the Tom Cruise fans, the wait is finally over and his movie Valkyrie is going to be released the day after Christmas. The movie is based on the plot of the assassination of Adolf Hitler. The other movies being released in December are The Spirit on the 25th, and The Revolutionary Road on the 26th. The Revolutionary Road is the movie for those who have waited all this time to see Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet together again on screen.

Another cute movie for Christmas is the animated The Tale Of Desperaux. The release date is December 19th, and the movie is about a mouse that falls in love with a Princess. Jim Carrey's Yes Man is also due to be released on December 19th.

Other interesting cinema releases due prior to Christmas are Twilight, Australia, Quantum of Solace, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Bolt, The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

All cinema releases this Christmas sound very intriguing, and some of them even have the potential to become Oscar nominations. The best thing about all these movies is that there is a great mix of several genres and there are films from every category. There is a wide choice for many age groups and tastes and preferences.

Solitary Man (New Movie Review)

Solitary Man (Brian Koppelman, 2010) - Why in the world is this out now? This is usually a pretty lousy time of year for this kind of movie. Solitary Man is an intelligent drama that mixes veteran stars and literate, adult storytelling, with a decent budget and a lean to the mainstream. It could have been released in October or November and given an Oscar campaign, a la Up in the Air. So, why was it released in the middle of summer blockbuster season? Solitary Man is not quite "best picture", but it deserves a lot more praise than it's going to get. I certainly will be rooting for Michael Douglas to get some kind of recognition during award season for his performance here.

Douglas has been this good before, many times, so it really shouldn't be a surprise to see him knock a leading role out of the park (though, with all that is going on in his personal life recently, it is heartening to see such a game effort - I look forward to Wall Street 2). This is a role for which he has a great instinct - an aging ladies man who loves the sound of his own voice and runs frantically from his demons as quickly as he kicks his one-night-stands out of bed. Ben Kalman was a big-shot who had it all and flushed it away. He's got a gambling addict's personality, and he treats his life like a game of roulette and all his chips are on black 23. Kalman's only comfortable in the extremes, where, he says with an earned bitterness, you are always alone. His attempts to save his career and broken relationship with his daughter are thwarted by his reckless tail-chasing, but Douglas never lets his character become a two-dimensional scumbag, showing us with his nuanced performance how he is a victim of his own psychological fears.

Solitary Man bears a striking resemblance to 2002's Roger Dodger, Dylan Kidd's fantastic debut feature starring a never-better Campbell Scott in the troubled douchebag role, the difference being that Campbell's Roger is not nearly as successful in business (and less so with the ladies) as Kalman, yet the running-from-home self-justifying male neurosis is equally on-point. The two films even share some overlap in casting, as the brilliant Ben Shenkman and Jesse Eisenberg turn up in Solitary Man as well (although Koppelman criminally underutilizes them). The male leads from both films have a "high verbal ability" for never-ending bullshit emanating from their mouths that is their Achilles heel.

When I wrote my review of Breaking Upwards, I failed to mention Olivia Thirlby. This was an oversight. Thirlby is a talented young actress who hopefully does not become the next Kristin Stewart, and so far she shows a tendency for the independent and intelligent, which is good. I first took notice of her in David Gordon Green's Snow Angels, from 2008. (I saw New York, I Love You, in which she starred, and fully intended to review it but never did out of sheer laziness - I apologize - it wasn't very good). The best scene in Solitary Man, the one that pushes the film to a higher level, is the one Douglas shares with Thirlby at a frathouse party on a Massachusetts college campus. She's the only other female actor in the film who can hold her own with Douglas, and she delivers a dressing-down we've been waiting for. Crucially, Koppelman allows Douglas the parting, devastating, line. I would have been too easy for her to be allowed to simply get on a soap-box and put Kalman in his place.

This is the second directing gig for Koppelman, after Knockaround Guys (which I haven't seen). In Solitary Man, Koppelman shows his screenwriting roots quite clearly (this is the guy who wrote Rounders, by the way). The entire film is motivated by and generated with words flying out of people's mouths. The upside is you get great scenes like the one I described above, and you have the potential to get a great, Oscar-worthy performance from an actor who can turn the well-turned phrases into spoken word poetry. The downside is that often something quality on the page doesn't necessarily translate to quality on the screen. As strong as the script is, there is something schematic about it. While it's satisfying to see lines repeated that carry different loaded meanings in different scenarios, Koppelman doesn't always hide his devices with enough truism. One such device - Kalman swallows baby aspirin every morning - is dramatic because it reminds us of his heart issues, yet doesn't quite jive with Kalman's reckless personality.

It is unfortunate Jenna Fischer is such a limited actress, because she is given such an important and deep role as Kalman's patient yet exasperated daughter, for which she shows very little feel. She is actually quite terrible, and often grinds the impulse of the picture's themes to a halt. Another problem in the film is the overly explanatory final scene. Douglas sits down and chats with his ex-wife and proceeds to unnecessarily explain everything we just saw, and introduces a barely-dramatized element to the story that is suddenly given central attention. It feels forced and unsatisfying.

While not perfect, this is the kind of film I take special pride in pointing out to those who tend to beat up on Hollywood, presumably for being populist and trashy, as evidence that every piece of garbage Hollywood puts out is worth it because the really big earners make it possible for studios to support midbudget projects such as this. "One for them, one for me" can work for studios, too, not just directors, although the ratio isn't exactly one-to-one. For example, Millenium Films, responsible for Rambo, Righteous Kill, and the upcoming The Expendables (not to mention countless direct-to-DVD action titles), also helped make the superb The Grey Zone, Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and now Solitary Man. The extra 10 or 15 million dollars big producers give to small dramas like this make all the difference, allowing talented filmmakers to assemble the cast they want, scout the proper locations, and ultimately do justice to the material without having to find financial shortcuts at every turn. Yes, there are compromises and strings attached when you take the money, and you have to make something at least somewhat commercial. But is that always such a bad thing?

Home Cinema in the Advance of Technology

If you desire to find a movie but you are lazy to go out, home cinema is the well option for you. Home cinema is a way seeing a movie within your home without going out to the cinema. It becomes so popular right now; it becomes a well choice to enjoy finding a movie.

The big size and the improvement of technology of television could be utilized as home cinema. With contributing of the comfort of furniture in the living room, you can see a movie in your home and at the same time you can also produce an amusement in your home.

The Improvement of Technology

The advance of technology is increasing year by year and so does with the advance of television. The improvement of technology of television could be determined from the improving of the size that is being as large as eighty-two inches; the big size of the television causes cinema at home becoming more attractive than a big theater halls.

There is two great points why home cinema becomes famous. Firstly, modern television sets give the same kind of clarity as is found in big cinema halls, so you do not need to go out for seeing a movie. Second, you can love superior sound including surround sound which will offer movie-theater like audio experience.

The size of the speakers of home cinema is large when it appears for the first time, so it is a cumbersome thing. The identical form of audio as well as video experience will be made by a good cinema system as you ask when you step within a theater. There is a wrong assumption that cinema at home revolves only around high definition television sets because more amusement could be gotten for you by picking out to use DLP projectors.

Don't make yourself in doubt, see more on home cinema [http://homecinemalab.com/home-cinema/home-cinema-gives-an-attractive-entertainment/].

High Tension - A Movie to Die For

High Tension (2003)

Tagline: "Hearts will bleed."

Every time I go to the video store, I'm assaulted by a new wave of low-budget horror flicks. Many have slick packaging and can boast either an award or critical praise, while others look like they were put together in the dark by rabid monkeys. Either way, the outside of the film often has very little to do with what's on the inside. That neat-looking movie nestled in between Moulin Rouge and Runaway Bride may be a major disappointment, while the one on the bottom shelf of the back row may be surprisingly good. You rolls the dice and takes your chances.

This was my dilemma when I came across the French film High Tension. On the surface, it had all the elements that would drive a horror fanboy wild. Buff chick on the cover? Check. Buff chick holding a weapon capable of mutilation and carnage (in this case an industrial buzzsaw)? Check. High-quality design and clearly marked "Unrated"? Check.

And if that wasn't enough, just look at some of the critical blurbs printed on the front and back of the case: "It will scare the hell out of you!" exclaims Dennis Dermody of Paper. "The best horror movie of the year!" cries Shawn Edwards of Fox-TV. "A must-see!" screams Time Out New York.

Nevermind the fact that I've never heard of Paper or Time Out New York. What did I really have to lose, besides an hour and a half of my life? With that thought in mind, I picked up High Tension and took it home. Hours later, the movie was in, and the lights were out.

To begin with, I guess I should give credit to the filmmakers for keeping things nice and elementary. The plot is so simple that even a child or small animal could follow it. In a nutshell: Marie (Cecile De France) and Alex (Maiwenn) are college classmates and best friends. Hoping to study for exams in peace and quiet, they travel to the isolated country home of Alex's parents. The girls arrive late at night, say their hellos, then go to bed. Soon afterwards, a deranged killer (Philippe Nachon) shows up at the front door and rings the bell. After that, well, I think you get the general idea. And this is all in the first fifteen minutes. The rest of the movie consists of Marie trying to catch up with the killer, who has abducted Alex and thrown her in the back of his would-only-be-owned-by-a-serial-killer van.

Very little seems to happen in High Tension besides a series of murders and chase sequences, but somehow they're able to stretch it out to an hour and a half. Luckily, the movie is still short enough to keep from seeming repetitive, and the audience is whisked along with precious little time to catch their breath. No doubt, just what director Alexandre Aja was shooting for.

I could complain that the characters are one-dimensional, but what would be the point? This is a movie which deals with in-your-face terror and graphic violence. When the axes start swinging, the characters themselves aren't even that important. They're just there to provide a target for all the sharp cutlery.

Still, the psychological aspect of the film would have been more successful if the audience were allowed to get to know Alex and Marie a little better. We get a brief amount of banter to start the picture, but five or ten more minutes would have been nice (especially considering the turn that their relationship takes towards the end of the film). And the other victims of the killer? Well, they're so underdeveloped that I felt absolutely nothing when they bought the farm. Of course, developing all these characters would have cut into the time allotted for bloody mayhem, so maybe it's for the best in the long run. Besides, underdeveloped victims are a staple of the horror genre. We watch this sort of film to see people get dismembered, not quote Shakespeare.

And fans of dismemberment have plenty to cheer about. There's some really brutal stuff in the unrated version of High Tension. Take, for example, a scene in which the killer buries an axe in the chest of an unlucky victim. First, we're treated to the sounds of the victim's breastbone cracking and splintering as the killer twists and pulls on the handle. This is where lesser gore movies would stop. The killer would pull the axe free, and the victim would drop lifelessly to the floor. But not High Tension. The victim falls face-first onto the floor, the axe still embedded in his chest. Then, the killer places his big work boot on the victim's back and presses down, forcing the axe blade to penetrate even deeper into the now-ruined chest cavity. That, gore fans, is how you shoot a murder scene! Of course, some top-notch special effects help punctuate the killings, adding a further sense of gory realism to the proceedings.

I also want to give credit to the filmmakers for having the courage to kill a child. True, the actual deed occurs off-screen, but so many movies wimp out and avoid this kind of thing altogether, as if real-life serial killers have never preyed on children. The innocent child ducking and dodging the otherwise unstoppable killer has become almost as big a horror cliche as the virginal girl who always makes it until the end. Well, not in this film!

And let's not forget the much-hyped twist towards the end of the film. It no doubt helped High Tension garner such attention, but don't even bother trying to figure it out during the course of the picture. The revelation comes from left field with nary a clue to speak of (most of those got left on the cutting room floor). Still, the twist is inventive and allows the picture to stand out from among the crowd. You'll probably love it or hate it. Me? I was somewhere in the middle. While I respected the filmmakers for trying to do something different, I also couldn't help but notice that some earlier events seem to make the "twist" impossible. But enough on the subject. Watch the movie and judge for yourself. I don't want to give anything away.

I want to end this review by complimenting Cecile De France on her performance in the film. She bleeds, sweats, suffocates, and swings a barbed-wire club with the greatest of ease, and through it all she looks absolutely stunning. The role of Marie doesn't require her to speak much, but she does a nice job of conveying emotion through simple gestures and facial expressions. If she keeps this up (and turns in a few dramatic performances to boot), we might just be seeing the rise of a French Sigourney Weaver. And as I sit here thinking back to Sigourney Weaver in her prime, that's something I would like to see very, very much.

History of Tamil Cinemas

Cinema styles of the olden times are always inspirational to a movie maker. The limited technology did not stop the cine makers from exploring international trends. The typicality of Tamil cinema is still present in the editing style and presentation. The earlier cinemas belonged to the silent movies and theatres were rare. The Electric theatre seemed to be the earliest theatre to showcase movies. Gramophones, tent cinemas and budding Indian talents paved the way for bigger clicks in the Tamil cinema.

The location of the mythological movies was dramatic and the silent movies had a certain charm about Tamil cinema. 1916 is marked as the advent of first Tamil cinema which promised a lot of renaissance in the times to come. The original films like Eratha Tilagam, Maniyosai and Pana Thottam had a distinct South Indian flavor. The feats of Shivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Saroja devi is still remembered by all of us.

Tamil film songs are about pure melody concentrating on the classical touch. The music of certain production houses was also typical. The old production houses were Kamala Theatre, AVM productions and Saravana Films. The transition in Tamil cinemas was also gradual and the acting styles also evolved eventually. The recent actors are more honed in westernized dance forms and yet the songs seem to be rendering the vernacular lyrics.

Tamil cinemas nowadays are also much about color and emphasis. The contribution of experimental actors like Kamal Hassan with his performance in Thevar Maghan and Apurva Sarvodagal was inspirational to other regional film makers to remake the films in their respective territories. Award functions in the South are also recognizing the rich contributions of the technical team.

Various collaborated companies in special effects and animation are based in Chennai. Their splendid works are seen in the recent movies and aptly justifies our self reliance in the field of technology. The presence of many cinema halls in Tamil Nadu is proof enough of the growing movie buffs who adore Tamil films. The promotion plans are also characterized with giant cut outs and unique propaganda to reach the film to all centers.

Movies - Great Pieces of Entertainment

Movies. Cinema. Films. Call it what you want but this mode of entertainment is very popular the world over. The technical definition of movie would be that it is (now) an audio-visual form of communication. It is a sort of art and makes up the motion pictures industry.

Movies have traveled their own evolutionary path before we see them as they are today. The need for entertainment is certainly not a new one. There are records which go back thousands of years mentioning entertainment forms like drama and music which were prevalent in those ages long ago. It was in the 1600s that the first camera was invented. Through the decades and centuries there was of course a lot of technological advancement.

The earliest avatar of the modern moving pictures was in the late 1800s where the concept of film with people and moving images took hold. All the way through to the late 19th century, movies were only a visual medium despite there being several scientists conducting experiments to incorporate sound to these moving images. And of course the concept of color had still not entered the mix. This silent and Black and White movie era threw up not only some classic films but gave rise to stars like Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin's movies till date are amongst the most popular films in the world.

It was around the 1920s when sound became a component of films. These were distinguished from motion pictures by calling them talking pictures or talkies. The next technological advancement came in the 1960s where color was introduced into the realm of film making. It wouldn't be too long before Black and White films and Silent films would become an obsolete form of mainstream cinema making. BnW's and silent films are made even today but it is more for the novelty factor of theirs in most instances.

The most well known type of movies is feature films. Feature films are usually produced by major motion picture studios. There are also independent movies which are usually financed and produced without the backing of a major studio. Often times if an independent movie shows promise, a major studio might decide to take up its distribution thus opening it up to a much larger viewing audience.

While movies are made all over the world, the most famous is Hollywood. Located in Los Angeles, USA, Hollywood primarily produces English language films. There is also the Mumbai-based Indian Film Industry (Bollywood) which makes the maximum number of films every year in the world.

Hollywood is also home to the best known and prestigious awards for the film industry with the annual presentation of the Academy Awards or the Oscars as they are more commonly known.

Lastly it must be said that according to most people and even across this article, the words film and movie are used interchangeably. Technically however, it must be kept in mind that the word Film is usually used to define this medium from a theoretical, technical and artistic perspective whereas the word Movie refers to the commercial or entertainment aspect of it.

Cinema Therapy and The MovieMaking Process

Do movies make a difference in our lives? Of course they do. We are human beings and we learn from what we see, hear and feel. Movies offer it all.

Even when the experience is vicarious and we are only imagining ourselves in a role, movies affect us because of the combined impact of music, dialogue, lighting, camera angles, and sound effects that enable a film to bypass our ordinary defensive censors.

We can become emotionally receptive and energized by an uplifting message, or we can become desensitized to violent behavior. But, like no other medium before it, the popular movie presents the potential of a new power for therapeutic success. It is up to us to see that potential and use it creatively and beneficially.

Cinema Therapy is a tool for assessment. While many adults benefit from talking about problems, thoughts, dreams, or emotions in psychotherapy, most children and adolescents find it more difficult to express such feelings. A young child's response to movies can help a therapist to understand the child's personality, concerns, interests or current problems. In a child's choice of movies, we can find clues to their working role models...ideal self-images, internal resources, potential goals, perceived obstacles, degrees of imagination and creativity, and their overall philosophy of life. Cinema Therapy allows children to express feelings that may be too threatening to express directly.

Films can also be used to get to the bottom of difficult issues. Films provide a common ground for discussions about problems related to family, friendship, school, anxiety, self-esteem or love. Issues can be addressed in relation to an outside element, and seeing how an individual in a movie handles a situation can offer children ideas how to deal with a problem in their own lives. Key scenes, watched over and over, can become the basis for practicing new skills. Many films enable children and adolescents to envision how their own problems might be solved when characters demonstrate behavior change.

Many films, like dreams, are full of metaphors and symbols that affect us on a deep level. Carl Jung believed that as the mind explores the symbol, it is led to ideas that lie beyond the grasp of reason. Metaphors and symbols stimulate bi-lateral thinking and creativity; creating a bridge to the subconscious and bypass normal ego defenses often found in traditional therapeutic approaches.

Myths and stories can help people place their own personal story and the stories of others into the proper context. All myths and stories have a villain, and tell great tales of a journey upon which a hero must embark. Likewise, young people are on a journey of the heart and soul.

Moviemaking can be considered the contemporary form of myth making, reflecting our response to ourselves and the mysteries and wonders of our existence. Movies can have a powerful effect on children and adolescents because they speak directly to their heart and spirit, avoiding the resistance of the conscious mind.

Cinema Therapy can offer insight, role models, and options for more positive behaviors, but its limit is in its vicarious nature. We are watching, perhaps internalizing, but we are not necessarily doing. Unless a child actively and consciously engages in behavior change, Cinema Therapy lacks the element of experiential learning.

While Cinema Therapy is a tool for assessment, The MovieMaking Process becomes a concrete tool for behavioral change. This is experiential learning at its best, because it is creative and requires a child or adolescent to actively participate in its creation by becoming self-aware. A child becomes the hero in his own movie and actively engages in his own journey toward healthy behavior and adulthood. In essence, a child now becomes his own teacher and is learning from him or herself as he watches the movie, again and again. He is becoming the behavior he admires and is solving his own problems as he acts within his own scene and as his own role model. The MovieMaking Process was nominated to SAMHSA's Service to Science Academy in 2008 as one of the Midwest's most promising prevention programs for its unique fusion of creativity, technology and human development.

The MovieMaking Process begins with the problem to be addressed, then turns its focus to the desired outcome. The movie becomes the hero's journey toward resolving the issue and demonstrating more positive behavior. If the issue is bullying the focus of the movie is on kindness, the hero learns through his movie experience how this feels, how it looks and how it affects others. The movie is often based on a myth or story from antiquity, but our hero is the child.

The MovieMaking Process uses the techniques of gorilla filming, which is basically the resourcefulness of what we have available at any given moment in time. This can be in a child's own home, backyard, neighborhood, park or the school playground. It's the creative process of choosing a theme and gathering, or creating, the props that make the movie a movie. Children and adolescents love creating their own costumes and their costumes represent the hero they wish to become.

The movie is filmed as a silent movie, using gestures and expressions. This is an important part of child development, to learn and recognize the subtleties of human feelings, acted out non-verbally in facial expressions and physical postures. This also allows any child to participate. It is not necessary to learn and memorize lines, merely to act out the part, expressing emotion through physical expression.

The movie is often filmed through reflection. A child is looking back on something in his past, perhaps an incident that has caused emotional pain, to himself or others. The movie is the journey through the emotional pain to resolution, and a happy ending. The movie always ends with resolution and hope. The journey is completed and the hero is more aware, more skilled and can now see the incident in a new perspective.

Narration is added after the movie is edited. The narration is the storyline that tells the tale of the hero looking at his past, overcoming obstacles, learning new behaviors, seeing new perspectives, and coming to be more than he was before. Using voice over narration, rather than attempting to film a sound movie, keeps the focus on facial expressions, body language and action, plus it is very cost effective in time and money.

Music is added to the completed movie. Music that is meaningful to the child or adolescent is best and is intended to create the emotional feelings that are important to behavior change. We must feel inspired to change behavior, and we must feel hopeful. Music can take us to those heights. While using copyrighted music is a very serious issue these days, there are always musicians in every community who want their music to be heard and used. There is also a lot of royalty free music on the Web.

It is essential for a child's completed movie to be Premiered with as much fanfare as possible. Inviting family and friends to see the completed movie is an important element in creating new behavior. Most children and adolescents like watching their movie, over and over. This strengthens the new learning and each viewing reinforces that learning. Now a child is learning from the movie he created. He is learning that he can be his own hero and can journey through the difficulties of life with awareness, skills and hope. He is no longer just viewing, he has actively participated, and that is the great power of experiential learning.

Hugh Jackman & Ewan McGregor in DECEPTION - Movie Review

BOTTOM LINE: There's nothing new in this 'thriller' that you haven't seen before, and the visuals are quite ordinary; only the likability of the cast make this worth spending any time on.

THE GOOD: 'Deception' follows an age-old premise that a director like Alfred Hitchcock would have milked for all it was worth. A young, naive accountant Jonathan (McGregor) who hasn't lived his life is befriended by an older, slick, hot-shot lawyer Wyatt (Jackman) who introduces him to a private sex club where participants only contact other participants for sex; no names, no details, no conversation. When Wyatt 'accidentally' switches his phone with Jonathan's, the latter is pulled in to the world of the sex club which he enjoys to full measure. It's only when he meets a stunning blonde (Michelle Williams) that he starts to fall for her and eventually pulls him in to a deceptive trap set by Wyatt. There's a lot to like about the premise, and there's a seedy, unspoken quality to the proceedings which you know will only lead Jonathan in to trouble.

The cast is the standout in this film; Hugh Jackman does a surprisingly good turn as bad guy Wyatt, Ewan McGregor does quite well with his badly written part of Jonathan, and Michelle Williams is quite reasonable as the mysterious blonde "S" whom Jonathan falls for.

THE BAD: There is absolutely nothing new here that you haven't already seen in some other guise elsewhere to the point where you can guess exactly how it will end; unfortunately that makes the film boring and un-thrilling. It's not helped by some rather average camera work; much like a television show, all the visuals are rather close-in to the action, hardly ever taking advantage of the big screen they had to fill (what's with all the shaky camera work these days - are all these filmmakers inspired by Paul Greengrass?).

Ewan McGregor, despite being a strong actor and managing to do extremely well in this film has unfortunately got a rather pathetic role to play. It might have looked good on paper but in reality it's quite silly; maybe we live in a world where it's hard to imagine being duped the way he is in this film, or even how he falls in love with "S" just by bumping in to her on the subway one night. It just didn't work for me.

And Michelle Williams? As lovely as she is, I don't believe she was the right person for this part. All of these problems obviously link back to the filmmakers, leaving a film which smacks of a 'training run' for a first-timer wanting to get their feet wet, where everything is by the numbers and nothing interesting or new is imparted.

How Do Kids Choose Movies?

How do kids choose their movies? It's a question many parents ask themselves. Young kids (and many adults) are so stressed about watching each movie the minute it hits the big screen that enormous queues are formed and tickets sell out before you even get half way to the door.

40 years ago, movies were not a big part of everyday life. In the 60's, kids spent more time outside, or reading and socialising than they do today. Movies back then were a luxury not everyone could afford. When it could be afforded it was only ever at the cinema. Over the past 40 year period, movie watching habits have changed dramatically. In 2000, there was a major shift. From one channel televisions and occasional cinema outings, now-a-days children can watch any of a number of different channels and going to the cinema is a common occurrence. In the past few years, movie watching has become very popular and easy to access; families can borrow movies from the video store, from the library, download them from the internet and watch than in the comfort of their home. New movies come out in the cinema every week.

WHY do kids choose movies?

Today, movies have become a measurement of social standing. Children who haven't seen a certain movie are "way uncool", and are perfectly aware of what they have missed out. The other children in their class will make them aware of exactly what goes on in every movie. This creates a lot of pressure on parents. All you need to do to understand how serious the pressure is, is simply see the massive queues at the cinema on the release dates of every new movie. It is very hard for people, and especially young kids to wait a week or two weeks after the release of a new movie to go and see it. Just the thought of missing out, or being the last person to see the movie is quite stressful.

There are many movies targeted at young children that come out regularly. For movie makers, children's' movies are a great investment since young kids are such a big market. Every time kids go to a movie, at least one grownup must join them. This more than doubles the profit, not to mention the sales of related products that get sold after the movie - McDonald toys, figurines etc.

Movies today are advertised as far back as a year in advance. Posters are put up in every spare space, in shopping centres and food-courts. TV ads for certain movies start as early as 6 months before a movie comes out. Even 3-year olds can tell you they are going to watch a movie that will come out in 6 months. School holidays are especially hard for parents since most movies come out during the school holidays. Sometimes, over a period of two or three weeks or holiday, there are over six movies to watch. In the local cinema there is only a two to three week window in which to watch all the movies that have come out. Young kids are afraid to miss out. Missing out is a very hard feeling for young kids to deal with and this puts pressure on their parents.

A good way to help parents handle the pressure is to assure kids they will be able to see the movie later. The movie will still be there in a week, even too weeks. If its not, it probably wasn't worth it, and if they still want to see it, it can be borrowed from the video store or downloaded at a much cheaper price. Knowing this will relieve the stress of missing out on that great movie that everyone's raving about and when you go to the cinema, you won't have to wait in line for half an hour and you'll definitely have a ticket when you get to the desk.

Daybreakers - The New Vampire Movie

The year 2010 has just begun the first vampire movie already landed on the screens. Twisted, bloody and even socially engaged, "Daybreakers" appears to bite the competition. Entertainment sometimes barbaric but still attractive.

In the near future, vampires rule over the Earth, raising human beings like cows to drink their blood. When reserves are running out, tests should be performed on survivors of the old dominant race. Despite its top rank, Edward (Ethan Hawke) sympathizes with the fugitives, regretting that his heart doesn't beat as before. Through a series of events, he ends up helping the minority human alliance with Elvis (Willem Dafoe) who would find an antidote to transform all vampires in normal individuals.

A film like "Daybreakers" is savored in different ways. Those seeking thrills who have already seen "Avatar" dozens of times will find a similar story but funny, rhythmic, whose lack of originality of the premise is offset by spectacular gory scenes and other more deadly. As they have done on their previous and already troubling "Undead", the Australian duo of directors, consisting of Michael and Peter Spierig, it gives heart to joy, ripping off arms and heads, giving them staging of a gothic atmosphere, asking their players (which also includes Sam Neill in dark ugly) of delirium without taking himself too seriously.

The filmmakers are not content merely to offer a simple guilty pleasure. They gild the pill, the grounding in social reality, a bit like George A. Romero to another era. It is so easy to replace the blood with oil or water. From the beginning, the tone is started by homeless people who literally die of thirst. That humanity is headed by vampires or humans, the result remains the same: man is a fool who spends his time killing his fellow men. Some sequences remind us even more introspective some historical massacres of the last millennium. In the presence of Ethan Hawke (who spends his time smoking like in old movies black Americans), it is also difficult not to mention the brilliant "Gattaca" by Andrew Niccol. The quest for normality of every moment in a society that tolerates no difference.

"Daybreakers" would of course have been more profound moments and detonate simplifying unnecessarily issues (like the final happens without warning). These drawbacks are minor, however at what could have another blockbuster being empty of meaning that exists only to show the king dollar. Instead, it is a less conventional entertainment than expected, including hemoglobin paid is offset by a certain moral depth. And to reach the female audience, the vampire hero Edward called same as in a "Twilight"!

Having Your Own Home Movie Cinema Theater

Perhaps you've been in a movie theater trying to get back to your seat in the dark. You politely ask a young woman at the end of row if you stepped on her toes earlier while getting out of your seat. She replies "you sure did!" To which you say, "great, I'm in the right row!" Finding your seat in a movie theater can be that easy. Finding the right home theater seating setup isn't always as simple. In this article we'll take a look some typical furniture pieces used in today's home theaters and how you can incorporate these into your home.

With the introduction of flat screen TVs and ceiling mount projectors our homes can provide real home entertainment with larger screens and higher quality picture than was ever possible 15-20 years ago. Advances in audio and surround have also played a big part in advancing our culture to have entire rooms dedicated to home theater or family media rooms that rival the movie theater experience from years past. Many people have decided though not to settle for the same seating however which included flip up seats and sometimes uncomfortable padding used in many theater seats.

Naturally the furniture industry decided to become involved in helping consumers find the perfect addition to that media room or home theater room in the way of theater seating. Theater seating provides individual seats that allow each person to sit next to or near each other in the same fashion as being in a movie theater. Many modern cinema seating configurations feature drink holders as well as storage options. These designs make this furniture the ideal addition to any budding home theater owner.

There has always been a choice in leather or fabric for cinema seating. You'll often have to decide if the furniture is going to be in a room where people will be snacking or eating or primarily just viewing TV or movies without. Always a tough call especially since movies, snacks and drinks all go together much like peanut butter and jelly on two slices of bread. You or your family may feel it a good idea to bring food into a showing of your favorite movie. Having furniture that can be easily cleaned and maintained is an important part of furniture maintenance in your home. This is really up to the individual in terms of the choice between leather or fabric for your home theater seating.

Many home theater furniture sets are offered with integrated arm rest units between each chair or recliner. These provide the possibility of creating chains of chairs or loveseat units that can make up one row of your home theater setup. Of course there are models that have footrests built in or some that offer separate ottomans that can be stored away or moved easily which can provide more space. Deciding how you want your home theater to look can be an important choice and choosing between these options lets you build the cinema you've always dreamed of.

In this article we've discussed home theater seating. Today's home movie experience has been greatly affected by our desire to bring the cinema into our homes but in a much more streamlined and comfortable way. TV's and screens are large enough to provide better viewing today than older box shaped models. Audio systems are also providing enhanced sound throughout the home theater. Seating however is probably the most important part to having a comfortable home theater. Today's cinema seating can provide loveseat, chair and storage options unlike anything available in a Cineplex. Adding the right seating to your home theater is the final part of having a great movie experience.

What is a Home Cinema Composed of?

Home cinema consists of receivers, screen, speakers and amplifiers. Let's take a look at the individual components one at a time.

Receivers - are supposed to be the heart of the home cinema system. It is the component that connects every part of the home cinema to each other. It works as a controller of the system. The performance of the whole system depends on this. If you buy the receiver of a low quality the operation of the home cinema will not be of good quality. The receiver should be able to hold digital or optical audio ports and provision should be there so that the old style cabling can also be used in it. The price of a receiver always depends upon the amplifier that is built into it. Therefore always strive to buy the best quality receiver in order to experience the theater like experience that you are looking for.

The second important component of the home cinema is the screen. Without the screen you will not be able to see anything. Four types of screens exists - permanent, portable, manual pull down and electric. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages and you have to check on those to decide on the right one.

Speakers are the next component that is vital to the home movie system. The quality of sound decides whether you are having the theater experience of not. The more you can reproduce audio quality with hi-fi and surround system the more satisfying your experience will be.

Amplifiers are said to be the mind of the home movie system. The various controls are processed through the amplifiers. It controls the slew rate, gain, bandwidth and rise time, noise and efficiency and linearity. These are all vital to the home movie system. There are varieties of models that you can choose from but you have to be very careful when you decide to buy one.

So these are the basic components that you should have to set up a good home movie system to catch the movie theater experience.

The Script is the Backbone of a Movie - Don't Neglect it

Don't be a filmmaker that neglects the importance of a sound script because you feel you have a can't miss movie idea, a buddy that has some film equipment, a hook up on some locations, and have some awesome talent all fired up to be in your movie. I knew this cocky wannabe Hollywood director type that strutted around like a rooster. He had a sure fire hit movie idea along with access to free film equipment he received through a friend. He not only lined up a couple of plush pads as locations, but also had full access to a hip bar near Hollywood and was able to cast two talented actor friends. The crowd he socialized with was in the entertainment industry.

I answered a crew call he posted on the Internet. Soon after he offered me a non-paying gig on his crew as director's assistant (a gofer is more accurate). I was hungry to learn and accepted. After that we would hit a few bars together the rare times I was in the Hollywood area (after a few drinks you can tolerate almost anyone). After a night out with a couple of cast and crew members he handed me a copy of the script.

I use the term "script" loosely. It was about 30 pages with some scenes described and minimal dialogue, if any. At the first production meeting I curiously asked how he was going to turn a 30 page script into a full length feature. He said all the scenes needed for a movie were there, he had a shot sheet to go off of, and the actors would be doing a lot of improvisation. I had only started learning about screenwriting and had yet to make a movie at this point. I was really looking forward to learning more about making movies and hopefully making connections.

What ensued was a shoot filled with chaos. Cast became extremely frustrated that the scenes had no flow. The crew got equally frustrated each time he had to change his shot sheet. Every unplanned change caused delays in set-ups. He went into shooting his movie missing the most important blueprint for the entire production, a sound script. He did finish making the movie, but wasn't able to edit it in post-production because it was a disjointed mess. It was a solid movie idea, but had a half-baked script. I learned later on he basically shelved the footage and pulled the plug on the project. Not the goal this particular filmmaker hoped to achieve. This could have been avoided with some solid advice.

How to Make Your Very Own Home Cinema

The question is - Do you have one? Actually, the question digs deeper into your knowledge on home cinemas. Obviously, there is precious little you could to match the size of a cinema theater. But there are lots you could do match the theater in terms of the picture resolution, sound quality and ambiance. Take care of three factors for which you would have gone to a cinema and you are on your way to design your home theater.

Starting to make a home cinema in your home often needs you to look at the aesthetics of the room where you intend to have the home cinema set. No tools and instruments talked about as yet! First, try and eliminate all the unnecessary things from the room. Think of having a couch where you could sit and watch movies, the movie set that will beam movies almost seamlessly and a table at the most.

After you get the room cleared off all the supplements, it is time to get a touch savvy. Assuming your Television is a flat 14" screen, you may want to buy some add-ons. Of course, you could go for buying LCD Plasma, but you could do with your television so long as it has some stereo speakers attached to it. Most television sets in the marketplace today have this feature so you don't have to go around looking for it.

Your den will remain one if you think of it like one. If you wish it could be your home cinema then work towards making one out of your den. Focus on the style of the couches where you would sit, relax and watch movies at the comforts of your home. Ideally, this should closely resemble to that of what is found in cinema theaters. Obviously, you do not need to buy 100s of them. Buy a set, at the most two, to get some things right.

Get an adapter for your television set for better picture resolution. Woofer sound systems for enhanced sound quality will help. Finally, you would need a broadcasting tool that will screen the movies for you. So, with all these could cost you anywhere up to $25,000, you could build a home cinema. Agreed it is big money, but considering the privacy and flexibility it could give you, it definitely is worth every cent of it.

In a nutshell, you would want to see the latest flick in a cinema theater because of their sound clarity, and the picture resolution. Why would you want to go to a cinema theater when you could recreate the same at your home? With a good ambiance in your room and with all that has been discussed above, you could be designing your home cinema at your home.

3 Top Benefits of Watching Spiritual Cinema

"Where can I find good quality spiritual cinema?" This is the question I have been asking myself for the past few years.

We are living some really tough times right now in terms of economy, politics, wars, and crime. It's no wonder that everything you see on television reflects that. There is more violence in movies, television series, and even the news now more than ever. The key question here is whether the amount of violence on television has increased to reflect what is happening in society or whether the violence happening in society is a reflection of what people are watching on TV.

Either way, I can honestly say, I very much enjoy watching spiritual cinema films. I find great benefit in watching spiritual DVDs for many reasons. The following are the three top reasons why I think watching spiritual cinema films is important.

Spiritual cinema films are enjoyable movies that you can watch with the whole family. No worries about there being bloodshed, violence, sexual scenes, etc. The films are usually rated PG and at most are rated PG-13.

In addition, they are uplifting, motivational, and inspiring. Spiritual DVDs are basically the type of movies that leave you feeling energized and happy to be alive. They inspire you to become a better human being and to be more compassionate, patient, understanding, and many other things that we all need improvement upon.

Not only are spiritual cinema films great for ourselves individually, they are also a very good thing to share with our family and loved ones. You can you sit down and watch these films with your children, friends, and family, and you can then talk about the movies with them. As you sit and watch a spiritual cinema film, you are given the opportunity to talk about the movie and in that sense talk about spirituality... something we tend not to do very often anymore. (And, who can blame us being that we now have to work 2 or 3 jobs to support our families, we are in the middle of a financial crisis, and some of us may even be losing our homes to a foreclosure!)

Still, in the middle of chaos, there is always opportunity. In the middle of the financial crisis that we are currently undergoing, many of us can take the opportunity and grow in our spiritual lives. By watching spiritual cinema films and becoming more spiritual, we not only grow as human beings, we also affect everyone around us. We can become more peaceful, compassionate, and loving... and this will reflect in each and every interaction you have at work, home, and out in the world.

Why Are Modern Movie Posters Not As Good As the Classic B Movie Posters of the Past?

Modern movie posters are rubbish. They have no life, colour, inventiveness or artistic pretensions. They just have one job to do:- clearly and concisely display a film in typical poster format to advertise the fact it is showing at a cinema near you now or in the near future. Full stop. Period. Boring! How has the movie industry allowed the quality of movie posters to fall to such a parlous state?

There was a time not too many years ago when cinemas were exciting places to look at and be in. Cinema chains were smaller and more widespread than they are today and as a result each cinema had a certain character to it, be it in the garishly colourful and musty, carpet upholstered chairs or the ice cream lady touting for business at the interval. Oh, and the cinemas back then actually showed x rated films (mostly b movies and lots of them!) that adults would watch, none of this dribbly MOR 12 certificate rubbish back then, oh no!

Nowadays, just about the only place to see a film is at concrete carbuncle multiplex where 6 or 7 films are displayed across an enormous amount of screens, most of the films featuring adult themes, watered down to a 12a for comfortable tweenage consumption and re-consumption (and adults might also like them). One size fits all - and not a very comfortable fit at that. And that reminds me, despite being more spacious than they used to be, the seats seem to make my derri?re ache with much more brio than in the old days. So what has all this got to do with the nosedive in quality of modern movie posters?

Firstly, there just aren't as many independent movie theatres and cinemas around today. The only place I can conveniently see a film is at a large concrete multiplex - a capitalist cathedral. This is not how it used to be. 40 years ago I would have had the choice of 4 independent cinemas to go to within one mile of each other in my local town. I'm speaking as a UK resident although I am sure the situation is the same in many other countries in the western world. There is a distinct lack of competition at modern movie theatres because the large studios run the show now - there are only a limited number of films showing at any one time because the studios purchase multiple screens to show the same film and ensure maximum exposure. In the earlier years of cinema, right up until the late 80's, there were more studios, more independent cinemas and a system that was not dictated by a few powerful film studios. There was a much more level playing field between films and studios over which films played. How long a film played for was a different story. If a film did not do well during its first week it would get pulled ruthlessly and another shoehorned in to take its place. If it did well it could keep its place for months (I remember when I was little boy when star wars came out and it seemed like it was playing at my local cinema for years!) Some cinemas even changed movies twice a week meaning a massive turnover of films. The movie poster was therefore a vital tool for getting bums on seats and ensuring a film had as long a run as it possibly could. If people were in the cinema foyer and unsure whether to watch Scanners or Table for Five, a quick look at the respective movie posters would quickly make their minds up. And this brings me to my second point.

In earlier decades people rarely had a clue what they wanted to see when they went to the cinema. My father said he would go every Saturday and often during the week for the simple reason there was not much else to do in the evenings in a provincial town in those days. So he would go to the cinema for something to do and then make up his mind what film to watch later when he got there. Today, people already know which movie they are going to see before they go to the cinema. Why the change? Quite simply, the media. Media promotion of films is now dominated by the internet where we can easily view trailers, see and read film star interviews, making-of videos, and more. And the hype starts earlier. There is drip, drip, then a trickle, culminating in a tidal wave of media coverage when a film's release is imminent. What chance has any other film got in the face of such a media deluge? And when the target demographic nowadays is predominantly the naive and gullible teeny market the film studios are rubbing their hands with glee. Who needs a crappy film poster to sell a film at the cinema? You don't! It's already been sold.

This leads me to another point - the changing demographic of cinema-goers. In earlier years there were many more adults going to the cinema than there are today and therefore many more adult oriented films, b movies and exploitation movies. This resulted in better subject matter for film posters (even though the films were often substandard). I think it would be very hard not to make a good poster for a b-movie if it was an exploitative nazisploitation movie like "Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS"!

Finally, and though it pains me to say it, films at the cinema today are generally of a much better quality than those in years gone by. Coupled with much more expansive media coverage, the movie poster's importance as a tool to sell a movie is significantly reduced. As I have mentioned above, a much wider variety of films, in terms of both quality and subject matter, used to arrive at your local cinema - including b-movies. It was a kind of a scatter gun approach. A "Lets show as many films as possible and see what works" approach. And that meant there were a lot of crappy films about. This is where the movie poster becomes a vital promotional tool. If the film sounds interesting and the poster looks interesting, its got to be a good film right? Wrong! Just because the poster has had a bit of money spent on it, it does not necessarily follow the film did! But a good quality movie poster always gives that implication. Most films that arrive at movie theatres today are big budget studio affairs and always have high production values even if the film content still regularly falls badly short of good quality.

So how can movie posters be saved? Well, high quality movie posters are still being produced for new films if you care to look for them. For example, the new Darren Aronofsky film Black Swan has had a number of brilliant posters produced for it. But for every Black Swan there are scores of Toy Story 3's. I think I have to conclude that the quality of a movie poster is just not important in the movie industry anymore. It just needs to be functional and unless the Internet suddenly explodes and the public abandon the cinema multiplex for independent art house cinemas (if they can find one), that's the way it will remain.

An Introduction To The World Of Home Cinema

Most people love a visit to the movies. A modern digitally equipped cinema is without doubt the best place to watch a film. The scale of the screen and the crystal clear display combine with the professionally installed sound system to transport us away from our hum drum lives and immerse us in the exciting world that the film creates for us.

A visit to the movies can be a truly breathtaking experience, but is it possible to recreate this in the comfort of our own homes? If you would like to do this you will need to invest in one of the many home cinema systems currently available.

Home cinema systems usually combine a display (normally an LCD or Plasma screen) with a source (Satellite decoder or Blu-ray player for example) and a sound system (Digital Amplifier or Receiver and speaker system). This will allow you to go some way towards recreating the movie experience in your own home, of course how successful this is achieved will be directly related to your budget, the time spent on planning your system and the effort spent on installing the equipment.

The cornerstone of all home cinema systems is the display so anyone thinking of embarking on such a project should invest the highest portion of their budget here. In order to enjoy the experience fully you must look at getting the best size display possible. This can be achieved with a more traditional LCD or plasma screen but projectors are becoming increasingly popular as pricing makes them a real alternative to a large screen. Make sure you buy something that is HD ready and includes a free to air digital tuner. If your budget allows look into the possibility of a 3D display as 3D films and television are set to be a growth area in the next 10 years.

As far as the source for your system goes you may already have a DVD player which will suffice to get you started. In future you may consider an HD source, this includes Blu-ray players, many games consoles and of course some satellite decoders. An HD source will provide higher quality pictures and sound, something all home cinema systems need.

The final part of your home cinema system is the sound reproduction system. You can buy reasonably priced solutions that include a powered sub-woofer and satellite speakers, these speaker systems would be the first step into hearing the sound track of your movie in the way the director intended. If you have a larger budget a dedicated amplifier and up to eight separate speakers will provide the optimum experience. However you must take on board that complex home cinema systems will be expensive and take some effort to install successfully.

The best thing about a home cinema system is that it can be built up and added to over time, this will allow any movie buff to progressively gain more enjoyment from watching films at home, then all that is required is a good supply of popcorn!

About Cinema

Cinema is another wonderful gift of science. It has become one of the most popular sources of entertainment and enlightenment. Today it is usually called 'Motion pictures'. The first motion picture exhibited to a public audience was made in 1895 by the French brothers Louis and Auguste Lumiere. They developed their equipment from the Inventions of Thomas Alva Edison. The first commercial success was the American film 'The Great Train Robbery' with the screening of 'Harischandra' ,dawned the age of motion pictures in India.

It ran for eight weeks and every showing was accompanied by a Running commentary to explain the story. Alarm Ara in Hindustan was the first talkies film. In the beginning, the producers produced only the religious and mythological films. The People used to see these films with great interest. Almost all the stories of our great epics were filmed not only in Hindi but also in regional languages.

The emotion picture recorded a radical change in the theme, technique and treatment. The taste and liking also changed. So social, historical and thrill films were produced. The Thirties-forties had been called the golden age of our film industry. There were eminent Directors, actors and actresses, story writers and play back singers. It is highly impossible to give the names of all artists and film personalities. The years 1942-45 Witnessed a boom in trade and industry in India. The cinema enjoyed its share of Prosperity. The picture depicted real, natural life. They were related to the actual life Of all sections of the people. Music, dance, dialogue and comic scenes were of great Standard.

In due course, the love of money brought in so called producers who had the slightest qualification for or knowledge of films. They wanted quick return. Adding to this the likings Of the people like the factory workers and students changed, the deterioration in the film Industry increased. In the name of entertainment the producers have taken up unnatural Romantic stories. All these stories are the same. There is hero, a heroine, and one or more villains. They go round the trees or a bush, run in the park or in the slopes of a hill, that is what we see in picture today.

So pictures of today make the character and the mind of students and youths more adaptive. The film Industry is successful only in debasing and depriving the national health and character. There must be a drastic change in film industry. so the producers and directors should evolve a plan, a strategy in film making so that they will be able to produce good films.

Movies - Why Must Movies Have an "Ending"?

Once in a great while I come across a great article that penetrates to the heart and soul of something that I'm intimately involved with but could not articulate equally well. The Washington Post staff writer Philip Kennicott's great article " The Surprise Ending? It's the Absence of One" published on July 9, 2006 is one such seminal essay that ignited an a-ha! moment as I was reading it.

The premise of the article is simple enough - that, almost all films made today still stick to the over-two-thousand years old Aristotelian paradigm of 3-Act Structure. Thanks to the Aristotle's "Poetics," we still reward those stories with a "beginning, middle and an end." We refer to movies that do not have a well defined beginning, middle and an end as "art movies," or sometimes as "European movies," both phrases used in a disparaging way.

As Kennicott points out with great precision, this complicates the job of professional movie critic because the ending carries such a high cash value that you are supposed to talk about a movie without talking about its most important element - its ending. It's almost a "mission impossible" but we are all extremely disappointed when a critic gives away the ending of a brand new thriller, aren't we?

All this is because a movie is as much about collective therapy as art. We want these stories to be told in moving pictures because we want to see the order, beauty and justice that we cannot readily observe in our daily lives. We would like to see that the principles we live by, the founding tenets of our civilization, still count for something.

Without a discernible ending, we feel lost. We think it is unfair for the director leave us "twisting in the wind" with the number of unresolved threads and possibilities. That's why we pay our good cash to see a good movie. We want the screenwriter, director and the actors do the heavylifting on our behalf, order the "chaos out there" for us and not dump that mental load on our shoulders.

We do not feel that a film is supposed to be a "reflection" of "real life," do we? Who needs that? We all are already familiar (to say the least) with our own "real lives" and mostly it is a routine between home and work. Who wants to watch one's own daily routine blown up on a gigantic screen although it is "the perfect story with no ending"?

Like hunters too close to the trees, we still want to be assured that the forest exists in all its majesty, complexity and beauty. And we expect movies to deliver us that "forest" by depicting all the other trees, their branches, and their leaves, with all the fauna and flora that we are not even aware of yet. We want a film to show us (without preaching if possible) the ecological harmony that keeps the "universal forest" alive.

That takes structure, intentionality and design. That takes scenes, acts and plot points. That's not a "natural object' in itself, existing independent of human desires and volition. And that's what "culture" is all about anyways.

The 3-Act Structure is not here by accident. It's a precious human invention created to protect our values, beliefs and sanity against the "chaos out there." That's why I think as long as the world exists, the neat linear ordering of "the beginning, the middle and the end" will be with us to stay.

I raise my glass to all the good endings in movies and life.

W Movie - A Monumental Failure

With a production budget of 25 million, W. the story of George W. Bush has only made 12.8 million so far. This movie was very unsatisfying, It was neither hilarious nor critical enough when it came to George Bush's life. I mean, people where literally falling asleep in the theater.

As it was Oliver Stone who did the JFK movie, I expected it to be a lot more critical of Bush's huge failures in the white house. The story skipped over 9/11 and only briefly touched on the 2000 election in Florida. They basically told us what we already knew about Bush.

They also painted him out to be never good enough for his father. He is always trying to appear better than his older brother Jeb as well. I really don't think anyone feels sorry for him and don't know why Stone is trying to humanize Bush and make him out to be an ignorant southerner. You don't graduate Yale while being stupid and ignorant. They also skipped over the fact that Bush and Kerry where both Skull and Bones members. They only say that Bush was in a regular fraternity at Yale.

I wanted to get my money back after the first ten minutes, but part of me hoped they would delve deeper and make the story more interesting. No such luck. The movie title should have been "Just Claim Ignorance". Because that is what they did when it came to discussing the WMD's and justification for Iraq. They also made it like W. had a personal vendetta against Saddam because of what his father had gone through against him. Well if that was true why didn't they just shoot Saddam instead of giving him a trial?

They portrayed Carl Rove as a nerdy political adviser who could't understand people. Condoleeza Rice was made out to be innocent through ignorance as was Colin Powell who argued against going into Iraq. While Dick Cheney was played by Richard Dreyfus, so he was slightly sinister in parts, but not enough to despise him.

This movie won't catch up to its budget because it is too soft on Bush for democrats and not funny enough for republicans. It is like watching a semi documentary replay of everything Bush did in his administration but no insight into why he really did it. Going into Iraq for oil, that is not the real reason or we would have taken the oil. Control of the region may be realistic, but they didn't delve into that theory enough. It is a sub par flick and you should save your money for any other movie that's out right now.

Caruso's Next Movie Premier Is On February: I Am Number Four

An extraordinary teen named John has just one single phrase in his mind: "I Am Number Four". This new release produced by D.J. Caruso narrates how the main character, John Smith, needs to stay alive by demonstrating he is a regular guy who leaves in Ohio. Few people know the secret of his origin and his special powers, including of course his guardian. Other eight girls and boys of his same kind and him are being chased in order to get killed. They all have a given number and the first three have been assassinated, he is next... "I Am Number Four..." This new Dreamworks release is another chance to keep you attached to your seats at the cinema.

We could tell you now that these nine teens are aliens and that they arrived to Earth to keep them safe because their Planet was destroyed. When he moves again, this time to a town named Ohio, John starts a romance with Sarah a local student and the he also meets Number Six.

He knows his enemy is closer but why he wants to kill him? John feels even more pressured as he knows that people have lied and even been killed to keep him safe. Maybe if he stills alive and kill the Commander, a Mogadroian, the rest of his brothers could also be safe.

An extraordinary cast of young and well known actors have been part of the I Am Number Four movie. Actually, a very international cast was consolidated according to the writers' and producer's expectations and needs. The main role is performed by Alex Pettyfer and you will recognize Dianna Agron, from Glee, as Sarah, his true love and also the key that opens more and more powers every day. The following stars are Timothy Olyphant, who plays the role of Jonh's guardian, the one that protects him the most. Among some other actors there is Theresa Palmer whose character adds more action and beauty to the movie.

As far as you can tell this film is quite good for all audiences and will arrive soon. As always we should let you know that this kind of films with fantastic scenes are better seen in IMAX format and even better in 3D. Please take into account our comments and we hope you'll be at the movies the 18th. We are not telling you if this young man will vanquish the Commander or if he gets killed so you should get ready for going to the movies soon.

Movies to Look Forward to in 2009

2008 was a great year for movies and they managed to rake in millions for the box office considering the current economic situation. We had the likes of The Dark Knight and Cloverfield not to mention many more. But what does 2009 hold in store for us, in the form of big screen hits? Let us now take a look at some of the upcoming films.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

With the popularity of the previous movie there was bound to be a sequel. Well 2009 sees the return of Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox for another fully action packed movie. A few years on and the storyline and effects should be much more mind blowing.

Terminator Salvation

Last year we all knew him as Batman, but Christian Bale returns to our screens in 2009 for Terminator Salvation. We will watch as John Connor rallies against the robots in what is bound to be a box office hit.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

The first Night at the Museum film was a surprisingly good one that I did not expect to be as entertaining. Will the sequel match up to the first? Who knows, but we are bound to see more museum exhibits come to life and cause havoc.

Fast & Furious

The fourth in the series returns, but I am not too sure about this one as we see Paul Walker and Vin Diesel reunite. But why haven't they been together in the other ones? The franchise has been affected by bringing in new characters. Can these two actors revive the movie or will this be the finale? Let's wait and see.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

We can always expect a Harry Potter film to be a success, this is the sixth installment and see's Harry, Hermione, Ron and friends return to Hogwarts and face Lord Voldemort again.

Saw VI

Every year we can expect to see a Saw film released around Halloween time. But for Saw fans this may be the last installment as rumors are speculating that the film has run its course.

There are also many more films that we can expect such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Angels & Demons which see's the return of Tom Hanks, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Shutter Island and not to mention the new movies that come out every year which bring us an unexpected treat as they take the box office and critics by storm.
